Update...

Mom left for IA to be with her mom who is in the hospital,  Here's an email she wrote to our extended family.

Dear family,
I'm in Iowa City at the University Hospital where my mother is a patient in Surgical ICU. She is still totally sedated. They did a 9 hour surgery on Sunday and Tuesday they went back in (they are keeping the incision open cause they want to go back in and keep checking on things), and yesterday they went back in again, both times taking out some dead bowel sections. They think they have all the bad spots out now and they have her reconnected, but they want to keep it open til tomorrow to make sure the repairs are all holding with no leakage. This is the best hospital she could be in for the most technically advanced treatment available. I'm just staying here at the hospital day and night, sleeping in the SICU lounge, it's sorta hard to sleep with some lights on all night and others snoring and sometimes talking all night long. I'm too tall for the couches so I made myself a bed with pillows, (which they have lots of,) on the floor. Last night at somewhere around 2:00 or so a whole group of about 15-20 street clothes people, filed past where I was laying and went into a room close by. Had to wonder what that was all about in the middle of the night. Maybe it was about todays security issues.
Mom is doing as well as can be expected. She is in a very precarious condition. Dr said Tuesday was not looking so good, but yesterday he said he can say now that he is "cautiously optimistic".
The news around here is that Obama is coming here today. His motorcade will be driving out here within a few hundred feet or yards from where I'm sitting. This will be at about 1:00. I went to a glassed in catwalk a while ago which connects to another wing of this whole huge University complex, and they are getting everything ready with security guards and sniffing dogs. I can easily see the tent set up and the walkway where they will pull the limmo up and he will get out inside the tent and go into the building right beside us and give his speech. Tho I don't know if they will let us stand on the catwalk to watch or not, but right now it's no issue. This county was heavily supportive of him before the elections, but strangely I don't sense a lot of real support at this point.
They have a whole surgical bay right close here evacuated and ready should anything happen to him.
My brother David and Martha came here last night on their way home from VA. So we are all here now except Lucy.
 Keep us in your prayers,
 Evelyn,
